To create a voting neuron on the Internet Computer, you need to stake ICP tokens.
Use the Network Nervous System (NNS) dapp
The easiest way to create a voting neuron is through the NNS dapp.
- Open a browser and go to the NNS dapp
- Log in using your Internet Identity.
- Click on the "My Neuron Staking" tab
- Click "Stake Neurons" at the bottom of the screen.
- Choose which wallet you want to stake ICP from.
- Enter the number of ICP tokens you want to stake.
- Set the dissolve delay (minimum 6 months, maximum 8 years).
- Confirm the creation of the neuron.
How do I stake ICP utility tokens? provides more detailed instructions on this process.
Important considerations
-
The minimum stake required to create a neuron is one ICP token.
-
The dissolve delay must be at least 6 months for your neuron to vote and earn rewards.
-
The longer the dissolve delay, the more voting power and rewards your neuron will have.
Alternative methods
You can also create neurons using:
-
Hardware ledger wallets
-
The quill command-line tool
Earn Substantial Voting Rewards by Staking in the Network Nervous System mentions these alternatives.
Remember, by creating a voting neuron, you're participating in the governance of the Internet Computer and can earn rewards for voting on proposals. The voting power of your neuron depends on the amount of ICP staked, the length of the dissolve delay, and the neuron's age.
